Silicon Valley became a growth model of high-tech industrial district for other countries due to the success. A lot of central or local governments have hoped to construct another Silicon valley benchmarking it.
The purpose of this study is to describe the development process of Silicon valley and to analyse growth factors and competitiveness of it. A production network is proposed as the essential principle of competitiveness which is able to let Silicon valley have grown. The production network includes 7 components: networks among R&D activities, networks among manufacturing firms, networks between R&D and manufacturing firms, networks among R&D, manufacturing firms and other urban activities(distribution, service, entertainment, dwelling, etc.), networks among venture capitals and venture firms, networks among industrial districts, and networks between the industrial district and world market. The history of Silicon valley can be understood as the process to construct these components of the production network embedded at this valley.
