Nowadays, the term "internationalization" is used worldwide. this study explains the Japanese use of internationalization. what do the Japanese think about it, how did they traditionally cope with it, and when Japan was unified, what specific characteristics did they share with their neighbours during internationalization?
Before Unification, the japanese used internationalization in different ways. after Japan was unified, there were several ideological turning points white became the period of internationalization. the modern Japanese understanding of internationalization, in respect to the economy, started about 1960. the Japanese, according to materials studied for this thesis, tended to follow western thought and to exclude Asian thought and culture in the internationalization of their government from the federal to the municipal levels.
The Japanese intended to cutback or evade relations with the East before Japanese modernization. this kind of viewpoint should be criticized. I tried to analyse corresponding models of historical studies in Japan and emphasize international relationships with Eastern countries from the Meiji Yusin Period.
From the analysis of corresponding models, I concluded that the Japanese copied the Western countries. The Japanese tended to think their invasions of Eastern countries were internationalization, in the name of modernization. That is to say, I showed that the traditional Japanese understanding of internationalization ment the Japanese copied ideologies when they were weak and they periodically implemented expansionist policies when they accumulated power
I hope that this thesis provides useful guidelines for understanding and positive growth as Japan continues to develop internationalization in the coming twentyfirst century.
