Saemaul Undong (SMU) originated in the 1970s and has flowed ceaselesslyfrom its inception into an ongoing movement at present; as of 2015 it is beingactively developed into numerous forms which focus on international, domestic, and academic institutions. In terms of continuity, SMU has been carried out in adiversity of configurations over the last 46 years, while in the meantimeresearch and discussions of SMU have concentrated mainly on the 1970s; as aresult, there is a need to address the typology and chronology of its phases ofdevelopment past that first decade.Accordingly, this study examines changes in the evolution of the scope ofSMU’s circulation and projects, and considers the typology of this developmentprocess from a time-series perspective that includes the geospatial diffusion ofSMU from rural Korean villages to villages in developing nations around the world. This is carried out to also aid in the formation of SMU’s theoreticalfoundation with the expectation that it will provide a number of implications forestablishing core values regarding the creation of Global SMU’s public, private, and academic partnerships in the future.
