In 2006 “Special Act on Support for Areas, etc. Adjacent to Districts Grantedto the United States Armed Forces in Korea” was legislated and since then,“comprehensive plans for development of areas, etc.” have been implemented.However, the plans for every sixty-two regions (Si and Gun) are monotonousacross regions, ignoring variety in regional characteristics. Most projects in theplans have concentrated on the physical policy approach such as road buildingand park construction.This study aims to suggest differentiated policy direction on the basis ofregional characteristics of the sixty-two regions. In order to comprehensivelyidentify regional classification, seventeen indicators are developed to embraceregional characteristics and a cluster analysis on the factor scores of theindicators is utilized. Sixty-two regions are classified into five-type regions.Finally, this study offers policy suggestions for five regional groups.
