The establishment of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on July 1 2006 was an unprecedented milestone in the local self-government history of Korea. The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Law as an exception of local self-government that came into effect the day devolved some of the powers of central government upon the province.
We have to enhance Jeju's autonomy to the levels of the Special Administrative Regions in China, the country governments in United Kingdom, and the autonomous regions in Portugal as significant exceptions of central-local government relations in unitary states. And Jeju needs to effort for internalization of the additional powers devolved.
